I've just found a great site - RE-cycle - bike aid for Africa. They are a charity that collect / receive old bikes and then ship them to Africa (ensuring they are in working order) for use by people over there... in many cases they make life much easier for tasks that we take for granted - getting water, children getting to school etc.
From what I can understand, if you are in Colchester they can even collect your bike for you if you're unable to drop it at their "depot".
