Are you looking for books about motherhood in general? Parenting books? A good mindless novel to read?

I really liked a book called "The No-Cry Sleep Solution". Great tips for getting your newborn or older baby to sleep better throughout the night.

A popular series in the UK is Gina Ford's contented baby, toddler etc.... personally i thought they were over board on the routine, but at the same time reading part of one of them in the early weeks when I felt I had no control (or life) gave me the courage to try to establish a routine with our son and once I'd done so (not the one she suggested or as strictly as she did) it made a world of difference to us all (it may have been coincidence though, our son may have been at the stage where he would have settled into a routine anyway)

I've always found some of the more useful ones to be food related - Anna Karmel is good (she has a number of books for children of different ages) - we often fancied what she was suggesting. Again it was a case of books giving inspiration and confidence to try things myself.

I'm not a Mum and, er, I'm not likely to be either, but from watching on the sidelines I can tell you that there are a awful lot of preachy, make-you-feel-useless kind of books out there aimed squarely at nervous new mothers.

I'm sure we've all seen them and I'd honestly advise anyone I knew to throw them away - there's not a book out there that should be telling you 'how' to bring up your kids. But, there are some great books out there by people who have load of experience and want to help you avoid some of the worst mistakes. Here's hoping this thread turns into a good reference - thanks for starting it angelicwriter!

I actually liked the "What to Expect" series of books though not for the conventional reasons. I don't like books that tell you exactly what your children should be doing at a certain stage because child development is widely variable about kids and these books tend to make parents panic if their child isn't "right on schedule". I, did, like the recipes and quick references for common childhood illnesses in the back of the books.

Those are great books happy! I also agree with you about the development of children. I used them more for reference, rather than following every word.
